There are strict dress codes for visiting the Pagodas.Visitors must be properly dressed before being allowed entry to the Shwedagone Pagoda. Men must wear long pants and shirts with sleeves - no sleeveless tops. Women must be similarly modestly dressed. No see-through clothes, bare shoulders, etc. If you show up at the front gate improperly dressed, there is a booth near the entry that can provide clothes to cover you up properly.
Dress standards are conservative throughout Asia, especially outside major cities. To respect this and for your own comfort, we strongly recommend modest clothing, especially when visiting Pagodas. This means clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. Loose, lightweight, long clothing is both respectful and cool in the predominantly hot Asian climate.
